The Hotshots gave up 32 points in the opening quarter, with SMB import Arizona Reid already registering 13 points. They trailed 30-32 heading into the second frame, allowed the lead to balloon to 20 points, and never got closer than five before the Beermen pulled away again.

“We came out there like we were playing on a back-to-back,” rued Webb, admitting that his team showed “no energy” in the first half.

“We made a game out of it,” he added, “But you dig yourself a hole as bad as we dug ourselves in, sometimes, hindi ka talaga makakalabas sa butas na ‘yun.”

Only when three of San Miguel’s starters – June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, and Chris Ross – were on the bench early in the fourth frame did the Hotshots manage to claw their way back in.

Thanks to James Yap and Marqus Blakely, they came to within five points, 83-88, with still over eight minutes to go.

However, it turned out to be their final hurrah. When SMB coach Leo Austria sent his main guns back in the game, the Beermen padded their lead to double-digits anew.
